Vermont State House Hall of Inscriptions

Monumental typography and inscription

The Hall of Inscriptions at the Vermont State House was conceived of by Governor Mortimer R. Proctor at the end of the Second World War. Proctor believed the Hall, then filled with photographic portraits of Vermont Civil War officers, should become more an expression of Vermont's cultural and political ideals. Intending to create a space for civic reflection. Proctor had the walls painted with quotations on the nature of the Vermont experience.

As part of an ongoing restoration of the building the State Curator made an effort to replace the painted quotes with more architectural marble tablets reflecting the style of the 1833–1859 building. Hood Design researched monumental inscription of the period 1830–1860.
